Stanford University

Resolution passed: May 2010

In a show of support for the passage of the conflict minerals provision in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act, the STAND group at Stanford University passed the first conflict-free resolution at the university level and sparked a movement. The university’s Advisory Panel on Investment Responsibility and Licensing, or APIR-L, voted unanimously to recommend the adoption of a proxy voting guideline regarding Congo’s conflict minerals. The proposal was approved by the board of trustees at its annual meeting in June 2010, which now requires the university will be instructed to vote in favor of future shareholder proposals that ask companies to report on measures taken to avoid the sourcing of conflict minerals. In other words, Stanford will leverage its influence as a shareholder to ensure that the companies the university invests in are conflict-free—or  working to get there.

Ohio University Honors Tutorial College

Resolution passed: June 2011

The Honors Tutorial College at Ohio University is aware and concerned about the crisis taking place in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and recognizes the role of conflict minerals as one of the primary drivers for this unspeakable violence. As an institution that makes significant annual investments in electronics products that likely contain these minerals, we realize our own responsibility and indirect link to the situation. We call on all electronics companies with whom we do business to clean up their supply chains. We will consider future policies that this institution can adopt to help combat the problem.

University of Pennsylvania

Resolution passed: March 2011

Penn is aware of the role that minerals found in consumer electronics products play in perpetuating the current humanitarian crisis in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The University is working on ways to monitor compliance of its partners in the technology industry to ensure they are keeping up with industry standards to remedy this situation and others that arise in the future.

Major contracted suppliers of electronics to the University belong to the Electronic Industry Citizen Coalition (EICC) an organization devoted to improving social and environmental conditions in electronics supply chains.  The EICC requires its members to follow a Code of Conduct which provides guidance in five critical areas of Corporate Social Responsibility performance – labor, health and safety, environment, management system and ethics.
As the EICC Code of Conduct does not yet specifically address the issue of conflict minerals, Penn has reached out to its major electronics suppliers to express our concern about this issue and to request information about their efforts to ensure that the components they purchase throughout their supply chain are conflict free.

We are aware that there have been recent legislative and industry wide efforts to address the issue of conflict minerals. This includes the launch by the EICC in partnership with Global e-Sustainability Initiative of their Conflict-Free Smelter (CFS) program and the completion of the first tantalum smelter assessment. Initial results from this program are expected to be announced in late first quarter 2011.

Penn’s major contract suppliers, through their participation with the EICC have indicated their interest in addressing the issue of conflict minerals and as these initiatives move forward, Penn is committed to supporting and encouraging efforts by the EICC and others to deal with this complex issue.
